Don’t you just hate it when you have to “eat your words”?
Story of my Life.
I first tried Nutella, the European’s version of peanut butter, thirty-five years ago when I was in Paris.
I last tried Nutella, a chocolate and hazelnut spread, when I first went to Paris thirty-five years ago.
Yuck! That’s the reason I wasn’t looking forward to inflicting this week’s recipe, a Nutella tartine, on any of my family, neighbors or designated-guinea pigs.
Instead, I quietly slipped it into my Super Bowl Sunday repertoire of afternoon goodies and snacks. Somewhere between the Giant’s 2-point safety, Manning’s nine-completed passes and Brady’s first-half comeback, I served this goûter ( an afternoon snack ) to an unsuspecting crowd.
This recipe was developed by renown French pastry chef Pierre Herme. The bread is brioche. The chocolate is Nutella. The sweet surprise is orange marmalade. The nuts are hazel.
Put aside the nachos. Hold the chicken wings. Save the veggie and cheese platters for another day. The football fans at my house loved this treat! As did I. (That’s where the “eating my words” comes in.)

At half-time the critiquing and suggestions poured forth. By using a lighter hand to spread the Nutella, this could be breakfast. Even, lunch. Taken up a notch, an afternoon pick-me-up, with espresso. Dessert, cut and served like a brownie or tart. This is a delicious toasted-taste. Like, really delicious.
What I did not know at the time was that February 5th was also World Nutella Day. Here we Americans just thought it was Super Bowl Sunday.

While some fellow Doristas, Nutrella naysayers, were also not looking forward to this week’s recipe choice, check out our site to discover other surprising results.

P.S. Word on-the-street is that Madonna uses Nutella as her go-to energy food. Whether you are a Madonna-fan or not, keep in mind the lady is 53-years old. Did you SEE her during the half-time show? Reason enough to mainline Nutella.
Good idea to use at your Superbowl party! Easy and tasty…can’t beat that combo.
Don’t you love it when Dorie surprises you like that? I’ve had more than a few of her recipes sneak up on me. This one too falls into the “I never would have mad it if it were not for FFwD” category.
I actually made it again for breakfast this morning, but this time with a toasted whole wheat english muffing and smeared nutella directly from the jar (didn’t bother to heat it up). It may not have looked as pretty, but it was still good.
I love nutella, but am not a marmalade fan. Good thinking to serve this for your superbowl party. And yes, Madonna looks fab.
I’m not at all surprised you like it now – 35 years is a long time. 35 years I hated bell peppers with a passion that bordered on sociopathic. Now I eat them raw. Our taste buds get wiser as they age. 😉
And, do we get wiser as we age?
I have one daughter that could chug Nutella all day and another one who won’t touch it with a ten foot pole (I am not sure what planet she came from…). I actually served this up as a breakfast last weekend – I think I spoiled them…
The brioche is lovely – did you make it?
Once you make Brioche, it’s difficult to go back to anything else —– common bread! I am anxious to try the bread you made this week, compliments of Authur the King. That looked delicious.
Wait – you didn’t try a little bit of the tartines? Aw Mary! I’m glad they were such a big hit at your Super Bowl Party. Can’t argue with you about the half-time show, I loved all of it, although I felt bad for Madonna. Apparently she pulled a hamstring before the show – she was still such a trooper!
Did I mention I didn’t eat any Tartine on Superbowl Sunday – I ate an entire piece of it (which is more than I allowed, per person, for the Superbowl crowd. I had to ration it. They loved it. My grandchildren are coming for President’s Week-end and I am doing it for breakfast – their first taste-try.
I knew there was a reason I don’t resemble Madonna’s fab figure – I don’t eat Nutella. Who knew there was such a simple explanation. This wasn’t a hit in our house, I couldn’t try because of the chocolate issue, and sous chef wasn’t wild about it either. Maybe it was because I also served it at Superbowl and he wasn’t happy with the teams playing…..
Cute post! I loved it as today’s breakfast… wish I could eat toast this way every morning! 🙂
Have to agree with you about Madonna and about how good these tartines were!
Glad to see this recipe changed your mind about Nutella and that it was a hit at your Super Bowl party! Seems a bit fancy but the proof was in the crumbs. 🙂 Can’t imagine a more classic looking loaf than that brioche in your photo!
Hilarious ! I am with you on the Nutella. Can’t say I had a bad experience but for some reason I never reach for the jar in our house. Unfortunately, after this week there is now one more high calorie carb combo I can add to my “like it” list 🙂 And I just found out about World Nutella Day but did not know about Madonna. Hilarious about mainlining 🙂
It truly is a meal for any time of the day. I LOVED this! Glad you did too!
wow! glad you wound up liking this one, after your first taste of Nutella didn’t resonate too well! 🙂
